Chanel Cruise 2009
Friday, May 16, 2008
(MIAMI) Karl’s got a gun. Several dozen, in fact, and he showed them off at Thursday night’s carnival of a cruise collection, shown quite literally in the pool of South Beach’s famed Raleigh Hotel. A parade of actual gun casings, painted silver, black, and gold, filed down the painted-black curvilinear runway constructed along the interior of the hotel’s famed pool. (”Only Karl,” laughed André Balazs). Lagerfeld had been inspired by an image of a gun he saw somewhere, and he gave the tear to shoe designer Laurence Dacade, who employed plexi to make them functional. Voila! The “Miami Vice” shoe, as it’s called in Chanel’s ranks, is born. And yes, you’ll see them in stores.
Lagerfeld claimed the Art Deco masterpiece was his primary inspiration for the collection, which also blended moods from the Rolling Stones’ Brian Jones and “Last Year at Marienbad.” Really, the pool in particular? “Yes! Very particular,” he confessed backstage, referencing the Esther Williams films that delighted him as a child and inform his aesthetic this season. (No wonder he chose the Raleigh’s Esther Williams suite for his Miami digs.)

(NEW YORK) “You always want to make something that women will instantly fall in love with,” Oscar de la Renta said as he calmly greeted guests and friends prior to the start of his Resort 2009 show. Twenty four minutes later, he captivated nearly every single one of them with his vivid, uplifting, and confident showcase of silk separates and lavish organza gowns.
Set against a carefully constructed background of spring’s blooming trees, the show’s pieces were most certainly designed to pop against a calm pastel background. There seemed to be a piece for an opulent time in every destination: suits for an South American equestrian journey, phoenix print dresses perfect for Mediterranean private boat cocktails, black ribbon dresses that Holly Golightly contemporaries everywhere would wear for chic dinners at Le Grenouille, and Caribbean blouses that belong in any place on the planet with a warm thermometer. A great number of looks were paired with enviable accessories like easy gold leather sandals, python clutches, and white patent belts.
Of course, a welcome buffet of radiant colors was on display in the 66 offerings: emeralds, enticing corals, lovely eggshells, beautifully reproduced turquoise tones, and clean whites. And that’s the way the designer likes it. “I’m obviously from the Caribbean, so I’ve really wanted to express the lush color this season,” noted de la Renta following the show. “It’s resort, and everyone is in the mood for some bright energy.” And what else puts Oscar in a great mood? “With today’s market, there’s always a demand for new: new looks, new merchandise, new inspirations,” explained designer. “So, this collection is essentially larger and conceived to really reach tremendous amounts of markets in more than 500 locations worldwide. For example, our partner for a new store in Moscow is pregnant and couldn’t be here. But half an hour later, she’ll see the collection on YouTube and order more than $1 million worth of the business! And that’s always nice.”

Fashion Fringe’s latest soles
Wednesday, May 07, 2008
(LONDON) Fashion Fringe has helped launch and bolster the careers of London’s top design talent since its inception in 2004. But one must address style from head to toe, right? As such, a new footwear category has been introduced to the event, created by IMG (parent company of Fashion Week Daily). Shoe aficionado Rupert Sanderson has joined forces with the design initiative to offer one talented designer a six-to-10 month apprenticeship with his company, which includes a month-long stint at his factory in Italy. Applicants may apply online through June 13. Five finalists will be selected to interview on June 23, where they will face a prestigious judges panel chaired by Manolo Blahnik.
Fashion Fringe’s platform has served to reinvigorate the city’s fashion industry. The program became even more exciting earlier this year when Donatella Versace signed on to chair the competition.
And it’s a great one too!

You want to know about “Sex and the City: The Movie”? Here’s the bottom line: It’s going to be a very, very big hit.
I saw it on Saturday night at a private screening. Women wept, cheered. It’s the Neiman Marcus catalog on steroids.
The four female stars — not to mention Chris Noth as Mr. Big, David Eigenberg as Steve and Evan Handler as Harry — are the most appealing ensemble of the year.
In the end, the movie’s success rests on Sarah Jessica Parker as Carrie. She’s the team captain, which means that she’s not only narrating but guiding the plot. Looking radiant and charming as ever, Parker couldn’t be better. She’s pithy and sexy. That’s some package.
I give a lot of credit to Kim Cattrall, who gets the best lines and the funniest predicaments. She’s allowed her — and Samantha’s — true age to be written into the script. Bravo! Kim and Samantha are the hottest 50-year-olds around.
Mary Alice Stephenson & Giuliana Rancic to tackle fashion’s biggest night
Friday, May 02, 2008
(NEW YORK) On Monday, when Hollywood’s crème de la crème invade Manhattan to attend the Costume Institute benefit ball, E! will be there. The cable entertainment channel has green-lit a first-ever special feature documenting fashion’s equivalent of the Oscars. “The E! Met Special,” as its working title goes, will air on May 8 at 8 p.m. and feature red carpet interviews by correspondent Giuliana Rancic with arriving celebrities and their designer dates.
What’s more, Mary Alice Stephenson and Bobbie Thomas will offer their commentary on this year’s Superheroes-themed exhibition as the go through the history of the Costume Institute and define why the annual affair put on by the Metropolitan Museum of Art is so relevant to actors and fashion A-listers.
The hosts will detail all the extra steps celebrity attendees take to get ready for their big night out, from wardrobe fittings to last-minute hair and makeup touchups, all leading up to the moment the actress steps out of her Town Car. But don’t worry, given that this is E!, there will also be coverage of the night’s best and worst dressed.

There’s no motivation like the dread of seeing yourself in a bikini to get you to the gym. If you’re ready to get into shape for summer, here are the top 10 musts to look killer in that new bathing suit.
1. 30 Minutes a day
Just 30 minuets of cardio five times a week is a must. It’ll rev up your metabolism and get you burning calories in no time.
2. Pump Iron
Women cannot live on cardio alone. I know you’re not trying to compete in the “Ms. Universe Bodybuilding Competition” but you still need to hit the weight, at least two days a week. Since muscle helps you to burn more calories, go ahead and give them a go. You’ll thank me later.
3. Write it down
Keeping a food journal may seem unnecessary but this is the best way to open your eyes to what you’ve been eating. Keeping track of every morsel you put in your mouth will have you changing your eating habits ASAP.
4. Have a ball
Just looking at one of those workout balls makes me want to run screaming. I mean how can I balance myself on something round and wobbly? But that’s exactly the point. Exercises on a workout ball will leave you with abs cut enough to wash your delicates on.
5. Buddy up
Going to the gym solo can get old real quick. Why not go it with a friend or even better gat a personal trainer? It’ll make the time fly by and you’ll always have someone to give you that extra push. (more…)
Update: Status at Hachette Filipacchi & Project Runway
Monday, April 14, 2008
(NEW YORK) Nina Garcia may have parted ways with Elle as fashion director, but in lieu of an outright dismissal, Fashion Week Daily has learned that Garcia has been offered a new role at the magazine: editor-at-large or contributing editor.
Should Garcia, whose contract was up for renewal this month, accept this lesser role, she would be allowed to remain on Project Runway for at least one more season. The hit reality series has just started casting for season five, with Elle as a confirmed partner, and will start filming June 8 and premiere on Bravo. According to sources, however, Elle is not expected to continue its partnership with Project Runway once the show transitions over to the Lifetime Network beginning with season six.
NBC Universal, Bravo’s owner, recently sued The Weinstein Company, producer of Project Runway over the move.
Elle editor in chief Robbie Myers was unavailable for comment. Anne Janas, senior vice president of corporate communications for Hachette, said over the weekend, “We will have more to say next week. Robbie is not available for comment until then.” According to sources, Garcia has not yet committed to Hachette’s offer, nor has a final deadline been set for her to make a decision. (more…)
Lust-Worthy Louboutins
Ruler of red soles creates exclusive collection for One&Only Resorts
Thursday, April 03, 2008
(NEW YORK) Christian Louboutin has partnered with One&Only Resorts to create a capsule collection of espadrilles exclusively for the group’s myriad lush havens and hideaways.
In designing his first-ever resort collaboration, Louboutin took his popular espadrille and re-imagined it in three styles: The Cataribbon, The Tiburon, and The Isabelle. Priced at $375, the fancy footwear comes in a wide range of colors and will be available beginning in June 2008 in the boutiques at One&Only destinations including Le Saint Géran, Mauritius; Ocean Club, The Bahamas; Palmilla, Mexico; Royal Mirage, Dubai; and Reethi Rah, Maldives. A limited number of pairs will also be available at Louboutin’s boutiques in London and New York.
And this collaboration is no one-off collection. Louboutin is already working on a second line for the resorts due out in November.
“Christian Louboutin, his designs and all that they stand for–elegance, fun and glamour–made him the most obvious designer to collaborate with on our summer footwear collection for our guests,” said Chantal Kerzner, buyer for One&Only Resorts worldwide. “Working with Christian and his team has been a fascinating process, and we are so excited about getting his celebrated red soled shoes into our boutiques.” (more…)
